Eagleton reads Richardson’s Clarissa (and novels in general) as a pedagogy in the social customs and practices of a class becoming aware of itself as a class. These pedagogies maintain and (re)produce particular social relations through the mechanism of ideology that reinforce a class’s particular by: Richardson’s novel marks the beginning of the process of what Eagleton calls “the bourgeois feminization of discourse;” whereby, at the time of the novel’s appearance, social relations between men and women take on the property of (in)dependence where women are considered to have “a more authoritative voice” concerning sentimental matters, but simultaneously subjects women to the power /5(3).
